Personal Living Alert
As the child of senior parents and in-laws, I saw a need for an organization with roots in the local community that could adapt products and services for their health care needs.
And, at the same time, help ease the stress for us, their children, especially if we lived more than a few minutes or hours away.
We want our parents to age in place and have an active lifestyle. They've worked hard their entire lives and should be able to enjoy the "golden years" - unencumbered by fear and without a care in the world.
But age isn't always kind, accidents happen, people fall, disease hits, and being minutes or hours away isn't fast enough for us to help them. Look at these facts.
The Centers for Disease Control, studies show that 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 take a near-fatal fall every year.
According to the Metlife Mature Marketing Institue: Falls are the leading cause of injury-related visits to the emergency room in the U.S. and the primary cause of accidental deaths (75 percent) in people over 65
According to the U.S. Census, almost 30 percent of those aged 65 and older in the U.S., live alone.
For women aged 85 and older, that number grows to more than half.
42.1 million American adults are currently caring for a loved one.
Nearly 90 percent of seniors want to stay in their own homes as they age, often referred to as "aging in place."
Even if they begin to need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care during retirement, most (82 percent) would prefer to stay in their homes.
AARP identified housing features that seniors find are especially important in the later years as they begin to experience reduced eyesight, poorer balance, reduced flexibility, etc. A personal alert system allows people to call for help in emergencies (79 percent).
PLA features personal alert devices and senior safety products made in the USA. Our medical alert systems are designed for stay-at-home or active seniors to keep their life protected at all times. 4 Benefits of Aging in Place
Maintain Independence. Aging in place allows for a better sense of pride in oneself, independence and comfort. The familiarity of home is just more comfortable for one who aging; having that favorite chair to sit in or sleeping in your own bed can never be outweighed.
Keep Routines. The familiarity of being at home and following regular routines brings one a sense of comfort and happiness. For many, the emotional value of their home far outweighs the monetary value, and being home brings a sense of security and warmth you cannot get from a senior living home.
Promote Healing. If you are healing, research shows being at home promotes healing more quickly and comfortably than if you were to stay in a hospital or nursing home. There is a significantly lower chance of being re-hospitalized when healing at home.
Consider Costs. Many times, a home care service will be cheaper than utilizing a nursing or assisted living home. Home care can offer personalized care depending on your needs and the needs of the family. This can be as simple as company and conversation or more complex such as help with a given home therapy routine or medication program. If needed, a home caregiver can also ensure nutritional meals are eaten and/or a diet plan is followed.
